Voyageurs National Park

Voyageurs National Park Itinerary

Day 1: Voyageurs National Park

Boat-Based Exploration on Rainy Lake

  • Arrive and check into your chosen campground. You can review campground options.

  • Rent or bring a boat — this park is ~40% water, with many islands only accessible by boat.

  • Stock up on snacks, drinks, picnic lunch items, card games, and bring bug spray + bug fog.

  • Launch at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center.

  • Explore by boat: dock or anchor at any unoccupied island, fish (known for walleye), or hike off-shore.

  • Wildlife to watch for: black bears, coyotes, wolves, and bald eagles.

  • Navigate carefully — follow the colored buoy system to avoid rocky hazards.

Day 2: Voyageurs National Park

Lake Kabetogama Adventure on the Water

  • Launch your boat at the Lake Kabetogama Visitor Center.

  • Unoccupied islands are open for exploration — dock or anchor, fish, and roam.

  • Focus your day on the South & East sides of the lake.

  • Stop for a photo op at the Lake Kabetogama Walleye sign near the launch area.

Day 3: Voyageurs National Park

Exploring the North & West Sides + Ellsworth Rock Garden

  • Launch again at the Lake Kabetogama Visitor Center.

  • Explore the North & West sides of the lake for new views and quieter coves.

  • Visit the Ellsworth Rock Gardens— an island with unique rock sculptures built in the 1940s.

  • After the day, pull the boat out and begin your journey home.
